Common questions

What happens if I miss the income tax filing deadline in Pakistan?

Late filing typically triggers a penalty and can affect your status on the Active Taxpayers List, which in turn increases the withholding tax rate you pay on various transactions. It's worth filing even if late, rather than not filing at all.

Do overseas Pakistanis need to file a tax return?

It depends on residency status and the source of income. Non-resident Pakistanis are generally only taxed on Pakistan-source income, but the rules around what counts as Pakistan-source income, and when filing is required, are specific enough to be worth confirming individually.

Can I appeal an FBR tax assessment I disagree with?

Yes. Depending on the amount of tax involved, an appeal lies to the Commissioner Inland Revenue (Appeals) or, for larger amounts since the 2024 amendments, directly to the Appellate Tribunal Inland Revenue. Appeals have strict filing deadlines, so timing matters as much as the substance of the appeal.
